Ravka is a young kingdom plagued by war due to conflicts with its northern neighbor: Fjerda. But even before this conflict, Ravka itself was a collection of smaller kingdoms in constant conflict with each other, up until Yaromir 'the Determined' Lantsov unified them all and established his royal family line, which is currently ruled by Pyotr the Third.
Part of the conflict between Ravka and Fjerda is fueled by their differences in how they see Grisha. Fjerda sees them as dangerous beings in need of killing, while Ravka trains them for their Second Army.
Ravka is based on Tsarist Russia, though other Slavic influences are also visible. Their names, too, are influenced by those of Slavic countries. But unlike the traditional patronymic surname system found in Slavic history and in some cases to this day, surnames in Ravka can be found in both the feminine and masculine form regardless of the person's gender identity. As is the case with Alina Starkov, for example, and Ilya Morozova.
