Catalonia is a small autonomous community in North-Eastern Spain, and has a population of roughly 7.5 million people. The capital of Catalonia is Barcelona, and is now a major cultural and economic hub, which comes after centuries of oppression, wars, and just general turmoil.
Catalan names are very similar to Spanish names, but there are still plenty of differences in spelling. However, while there are laws in place to allow for translations of surnames from Spanish to the Catalan versions not everybody has done this, so many names are shared among Spanish and Catalan people. Those familiar with Spanish names will be able to more easily spot those differences, but to somebody who isn't familiar the differences can be very subtle.
One big difference however is that surnames are connected with an 'i' rather than a 'y' as they are in Spanish. The father's surname and mother's surname are often given to a child and connected with the 'i' (or 'y' in Spanish), and translates to 'and'.
