Instrument name generator
This name generator will give you 10 random names for musical instruments, inspired by real instruments from around the world.
Instrument names vary greatly and have no real naming conventions in most cases. Which makes it both easy and difficult to create instrument name, as it can be nearly everything. Piano, guitar, violin, harp, none of these seem to have too much in common with each other in terms of their name.
Then there are all the hundreds of instruments from other cultures with their native names, like the taiko and shamisen from Japan, the ukulele from Hawaii, the vuvuzela from South-Africa and the balalaika from Russia to name just a few.
The one thing many instrument names do have in common is that they tend to sound melodic. Often similar to how the instrument itself will sound. There are exceptions of course. The names in this generator will range from more traditionally styled names to more fantasy styled names. The names have been separated into 3 categories, although the first could be seen as 2 as well.
The first 6 names are fairly short names. The first 3 will always end in a vowel and the second 3 will always end in a consonant. This means the first 3 tend to be the ones which sound more melodic, while the last 3 have a tendency to sound more guttural.
The next 2 names incorporate a real instrument name or partial name to create a new version of that instrument.
The last 2 names are longer names and can thus vary greatly in style.
