Slovak name generator

This name generator will give you 10 random Slovak names and surnames.

Slovakia is a relatively small country in Central Europe and has a population of roughly 5.5 million people. Slovakia has a turbulent history and was often controlled by a different kingdom, empire or other power. It wasn't until 1993 that Slovakia became an independent state after Czechoslovakia peacefully split into Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

As a result of this turbulent history, and because Slovakia is part of the Slavic language family, a lot of Slovak names are very similar to those of countries around Slovakia. Many naming conventions found within the Slavic languages were present in Slovakia at some point in time as well, but modern names tend no longer follow any of these any more, with the exception of the tradition of surnames being passed on through marriage and through the paternal line at birth. Many of the older naming conventions do still leave traces though, names change only gradually after all, especially surnames.

Surnames are sex dependent, meaning female names will be given a suffix. They usually always end in -ová or -á, with some exceptions. These exceptions usually mean the surname is foreign. Whether a name ends in either -á or -ová usually depends on where the name is derived from.
